Dal Tadka - Yellow Lentil Curry

Comforting lentils tempered with flavorful spices, staple in Indian meals.

Ingredients:

  • Toor dal (pigeon peas) – 1 cup

  • Water – 3 cups

  • Turmeric powder – ½ tsp

  • Salt – to taste

  • Ghee or oil – 2 tbsp

  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp

  • Garlic – 4-5 cloves, finely chopped

  • Dry red chilies – 2

  • Asafoetida (hing) – a pinch

  • Tomato – 1 medium, chopped

  • Green chili – 1, slit

  • Fresh coriander – for ga ish

Method:

  1. Wash dal and pressure cook with turmeric and water until soft.

  2. Heat ghee, add cumin seeds, garlic, dry red chilies, and hing; sauté till garlic is golden.

  3. Add tomatoes and green chili, cook until soft.

  4. Pour tempering over cooked dal, add salt, and mix well. Simmer for 5 mins.

  5. Ga ish with coriander and serve hot with rice or roti.
